Hiring: WordPress Developer

The Sterner Stuff team is growing! We’re seeking a self-motivated full-stack PHP developer.

Our Company and Work

Sterner Stuff is a web shop specializing in full-stack PHP work. Our projects are primarily in the WordPress + Laravel space. We position ourselves for custom WordPress work, though also do the drag-and-drop work as needed. We have multiple projects using client-side front-end frameworks like React and Vue.

The sorts of projects we work on are varied. We have some clients with “brochure-ware” WordPress sites, but we prefer to work with folks with interesting problems to solve, including high traffic, eCommerce, and events management.

Work may include:

  • Writing new custom business logic in Laravel apps
  • Replicating, diagnosing, and fixing bugs in applications
  • Writing tests to prevent regression into said bugs
  • Debugging third-party WordPress plugin and theme conflicts
  • Making content and configuration changes to WordPress sites
  • Building brand new sites and applications
  • Running and automating monthly WordPress updates

We currently have clients committed to 20 hours/week of work that you would be solely responsible for. The right candidate will make it possible for this to increase to a full-time schedule very quickly.

While remote work is acceptable, we prefer a local candidate that can stop into the office from time to time.

Requirements

Must have:

  • Git competence
  • Competence with object-oriented PHP, including classes, namespaces, etc. Even in the WordPress space
  • Experience building and maintaining Laravel applications
  • Flexible with your duties
  • Extremely comfortable with WordPress hook system and template inheritance to customize third-party WordPress themes and plugins
  • Experience building a WordPress theme from scratch based on design assets
    • Experience with full-site editing and configuring a theme.json file for client success is a big plus

Nice-to-Have’s

  • Basic understanding of various levels of caching on the web
  • Shopify experience

Compensation

The pay for this position is flexible, with a minimum $24/hr, ranging up to $35/hr and up for the right candidate. Regardless of where pay starts, we look forward to continuing to increase compensation and offering full benefits as you grow and develop in the company.
